Pierogi Mountain is a Columbus staple and if you’ve watched Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, you may already know them. As a Cleveland native, I have strong opinions about pierogies. Somehow, despite living here and ordering from them plenty of times, I had never actually been to the restaurant. We finally made our way down, and honestly, I don’t know what took us so long.
If you’re not familiar with Pierogi Mountain, they offer a variety of pierogies, from traditional favorites to more experimental flavors. They also have a solid selection of vegan options, so there’s something for pretty much everyone. If you’re the kind of person who looks at a menu and immediately says, “I want one of everything,” they have the perfect solution: the Mountain which comes with one of each pierogi.
We got classics like Potato Cheddar, Potato, Sauerkraut & Mushroom, along with vegan options like Tomatillo Chile Verde, Sweet Corn, Old Bay & Chive. Then there was the absolute wildcard: Cool Ranch, which is an electric blue color. I am not a ranch person, but I respect the choices made.
We also ordered the poutine, and when they say the small is enough to share, they are not joking. This thing was enormous. You can choose from three different gravies, and we went with the Cider Pot Roast.
But the real star for us was the Haluski with pork kielbasa. The menu describes it as buttery braised cabbage, onions, carrot and radish served over kopytka noodles. I had to Google “kopytka,” and fun fact: the name means “little hooves” . More importantly they’re a potato based noodle.
Whatever you want to call them, they were fantastic.
This dish tasted like someone’s Polish grandma welcomed you into their home. It was hearty, rustic, buttery and incredibly comforting. I could absolutely see this becoming a fall and winter staple for us. It’s the kind of meal that makes you want to put on sweatpants, curl up under a blanket and take a nap.
What to Know Before You Go
There is ample street parking near by. The pierogi menu is always changing, so check their website and social media before you go to see what they’re serving. If you’re overwhelmed by the options, just get the Mountain. Life is short. Eat one of everything.
