I’ve been on the hunt for good trivia nights around Columbus, and Understory immediately stood out online. The photos looked fantastic, especially the patio. One Thursday we decided to finally head over and check it out. I can confirm, the patio really is gorgeous. 

Trivia starts at 7:00 PM every Thursday and usually wraps up between 9- 9:30 PM. There was a solid crowd the entire night, and it definitely felt like there were some regular teams who come every week. We started the night with 22 teams and had 18 at the end.  The atmosphere stayed relaxed and welcoming. 

While you can sit inside, I do recommend trying to get a seat on the patio. They’ve got speakers set up so you can still hear all the questions clearly. Which makes the outdoor seating actually work well for trivia instead of feeling disconnected.

The format is six rounds with a wide variety of topics that change every week. When we went, rounds included movies, music, TV, sports, geography and World Cup winners.. There is a mix of questions being read out loud and questions on your phone. In our game we had to name musicians by seeing their photograph.

One thing I really liked was the pacing. There’s enough downtime between rounds to catch up with friends, grab another drink, or just enjoy the patio without feeling rushed. The night moves steadily, but never feels frantic. I have to give a shout out to the host, who was fantastic! 

The drinks were solid across the board. Understory is owned by Wolfridge so if you are a fan of them you’ll love the beer selection. In addition to beer, wine, cocktails, and non-alcoholic options. It was  a well-rounded menu with enough variety for everyone in the group to find something they liked.

What to Know Before You Go

Parking is probably the biggest downside. They have a small parking lot, but it fills up quickly. If it’s busy, expect to park on the street nearby. Trivia is played entirely on your phone, so make sure you show up with a full battery or bring a portable charger if your phone tends to die quickly.  Also think of your team name ahead of time.

Final Thoughts

Understory nails the balance between competitive trivia and a genuinely good social night out. Between the beautiful patio, relaxed pacing, drink selection, and well-run trivia format, it’s an easy recommendation if you’re looking for a recurring weeknight activity in Columbus.

I’d absolutely go back.
