Looking for a weekend activity that involves questionable historical accuracy, excellent people-watching, live music, and the opportunity to wear a corset in public without anyone asking questions? Then it’s time to visit the Ohio Renaissance Festival!

The Ren Fest is a great way to spend a fall weekend, whether you go all-in on the costumes or just show up ready to wander around and see what happens. There are shows happening throughout the park, live music, performers roaming the grounds, food, drinks, shopping, and plenty of opportunities to watch people commit wholeheartedly to the bit. Honestly, the people-watching alone is worth the trip.

The jousting is real. This isn’t just a couple of people in shiny costumes gently tapping sticks together for the crowd. The jousting involves real skill, and the riders use it to compete in regional jousting competitions. Watching someone charge at another person on horseback with a lance is a pretty spectacular reminder that this festival has something for everyone, including those of us who enjoy a little medieval mayhem.

Check out the Cincinnati Barbarians. If you’re interested in armored combat, make time to catch this Cincinnati-area group. They bring real fights, real armor, real weapons, and real combat skills to the festival. It’s a little different from the theatrical performances around the grounds, and it’s worth checking out if you want to see what happens when historical combat enthusiasts take their hobby very seriously. Check the schedule to find out when they’re performing.

Want something a little more campy? Find Human Combat Chess! A cast of characters settles its differences with a rousing game of Human Combat Chess. It’s exactly as wonderfully ridiculous as it sounds: a giant chess match where the pieces are people, and settling an argument apparently requires a full production. If you’re looking for something that’s more theatrical spectacle than historical combat, add this one to your list.

Go see Beowulf. If you only take one recommendation from us, make it this one: Beowulf is the best mud show. It’s messy, ridiculous, and exactly the sort of entertainment you should expect from a Renaissance festival. Get yourself a spot, embrace the chaos, and prepare to laugh.

What to Know Before You Go

Get there early if you need coffee. If your festival plans require caffeine before you can comfortably interact with other humans, there’s a coffee spot near the front of the park. But if you arrive and discover a line worthy of a royal queue, don’t panic! There’s another coffee spot toward the back of the park in Whimsy Woods. Sometimes the real treasure is the coffee you didn’t have to wait 20 minutes for.

Bring sunscreen. Seriously. The festival is set in a big, open field. There’s not a ton of shade, and if the sun is out, you will get sunburned if you aren’t prepared. Apply sunscreen before you arrive, bring some with you, and reapply throughout the day. Your medieval adventurer outfit does not count as sun protection unless it happens to include a very effective hat.

Make time for the shows. One of the best parts of the festival is that there’s always something happening. Between music, comedy, demonstrations, and performers wandering the grounds, you can easily fill an entire day without getting bored. Check the festival schedule before you go so you can plan around the shows you really want to see.

Wear a costume if you want to! You absolutely don’t need to dress up to enjoy the festival, but it’s a fantastic excuse to break out that fantasy outfit, put on a ridiculous hat, or finally live your dream of looking like someone who owns a sword and has strong opinions about the monarchy. You’ll see everything from elaborate historical outfits to fantasy-inspired looks, and nobody is going to judge you for leaning into the theme.

Final Thoughts: Huzzah, Get Yourself to the Faire!

The Ohio Renaissance Festival is a fantastic way to spend a weekend. You can wander through the village, listen to music, watch performers, browse artisan shops, eat your weight in festival food, and spend several hours cheering for people enthusiastically hitting each other with things.

Whether you’re a seasoned Ren Fest regular or a first-timer who just wants an excuse to wear a fun outfit, there’s plenty to enjoy. Grab your friends, put on your most ridiculous hat, pack your sunscreen, and go have an adventure. You can be a responsible adult again on Monday.

Huzzah!
