New Cocktail Bar in Franklinton: The Shapeshifter

This week, we checked out The Shapeshifter, a new cocktail bar in Franklinton. Opened by a Mouton Allum, this spot continues their tradition of crafting unique, high-quality cocktails that will give you plenty to talk about and plenty of reasons to come back.

Nestled in Columbus’s arts district, standing out can be a challenge. Thankfully, Shapeshifter has no trouble making an impression. The vibe is immaculate. From the eye-catching mural outside to the delightfully maximalist interior, you know you’re in for a good time the moment you walk through the door. Seriously, can we take a moment to appreciate how stunning this space is? If “just one drink” was the plan, the décor alone may convince you to stay for two.

The opening menu featured fan favorites from the various pop-ups they hosted around Columbus before opening their permanent home. We sampled four cocktails: the Panda Painkiller, Getting Figgy With It, Macho Match Man, and New Kids on the Block.

For me, the star of the night was the Panda Painkiller. It may be one of the best takes on a Painkiller I’ve ever had. Painkillers can be tricky, they often lean too sweet or too coconut-forward. Shapeshifter somehow manages to perfectly balance both flavors, creating a cocktail that’s rich and tropical without becoming cloying or tasting like you accidentally drank sunscreen.

Meanwhile, my partner-in-crime’s favorite was Getting Figgy With It. The drink was delicious, complex without being pretentious, and somehow managed to taste like Christmas in July. If Mariah Carey released a summer cocktail, this would be it.

What to Know Before You Go

There is no dedicated parking lot. Most street parking in the area is paid, so plan accordingly.

There is a patio, which we somehow completely missed during our visit. We consider this an excellent excuse to return for further investigation.

Final Thoughts

Shapeshifter is a fantastic addition to Franklinton’s bar scene. The cocktails are creative, the space is gorgeous, and the atmosphere strikes the perfect balance between welcoming and impressive. We can already see ourselves becoming regulars, especially during Franklinton Fridays.

If you’re looking for a cocktail bar that serves drinks as memorable as its décor, Shapeshifter is well worth a visit.
